Removable Insulation Jackets

Removable insulation jackets are custom-fabricated insulation covers for valves, flanges, instrumentation, and other items that need regular access for inspection, maintenance, or calibration. Fenix designs and manufactures removable insulation jackets to suit the item being insulated — providing the same thermal performance as a permanent insulation installation but with the ability to remove and replace without destroying the insulation system. All jackets are made to measure and documented for reuse.

Fenix manufactures removable insulation jackets to order for each item requiring insulation. We survey the valve, flange, or fitting — measuring the geometry, the connection points, and the clearances required for the fastening system — and produce a jacket that fits correctly first time and maintains thermal integrity across the seam with the adjacent permanent insulation.

The fabric outer is typically silicone-coated fibreglass, which provides heat resistance, mechanical robustness, and resistance to process fluids and cleaning agents in service. The infill is mineral wool for standard temperature ranges, ceramic fibre for high-temperature applications, and aerogel for thin-profile high-performance requirements. All fastening systems are stainless steel.

For plant operators with a large number of uninsulated valves and fittings on an existing system, Fenix can carry out a survey — identifying every uninsulated item, measuring it, and producing a priced schedule for the full jacket set. This is a common starting point for sites implementing an energy reduction programme where valve and fitting losses have been identified as a significant contributor.

All jackets are numbered and logged against their installation position. Maintenance teams receive a schedule showing which jacket belongs where and how to refasten it correctly. Jackets can be returned to Fenix for inspection and replacement if they have been damaged in service.

Why Removable Jackets

Valves, flanges, steam traps, instruments, and expansion joints are points of heat loss on any insulated system — they are typically left uninsulated because installing permanent insulation prevents maintenance access. Removable jackets solve this by providing a purpose-made insulation cover that is fastened in place without adhesive and can be removed, inspected, and refitted by maintenance teams without specialist skills.

The thermal saving from insulating all valves and flanges on an insulated pipework system is significant. An uninsulated globe valve on a steam system loses heat at a rate comparable to a considerable length of uninsulated pipework. Multiply that across every valve, flange, and fitting on a process system and the aggregate heat loss is material.

Fenix manufactures removable jackets from silicone-coated fibreglass outer fabric, mineral wool or ceramic fibre infill, and stainless steel wire fastening systems. The jacket is sized to the item, constructed to maintain contact with the adjacent permanent insulation, and labelled for re-identification after removal.

FAQs

  • What is a removable insulation jacket?

A removable insulation jacket is a purpose-made insulated cover, manufactured to fit a specific valve, flange, steam trap, or other item that requires regular access for maintenance. It provides thermal insulation equivalent to the permanent insulation on the adjacent pipework, but can be unfastened and removed by maintenance teams without tools or specialist skills, and refitted after the access work is complete.

  • What items can be fitted with removable jackets?

We manufacture removable jackets for gate, globe, ball, butterfly, and control valves across all common DN sizes; flanged joints; steam traps; expansion joints; instrumentation including transmitters, actuators, and control heads; pump and compressor bodies; and heat exchanger end covers. For unusual or complex geometry items, we take a physical survey and fabricate a bespoke jacket to fit.

  • How do removable jackets fasten?

Standard Fenix removable jackets fasten using stainless steel wire lacing systems — robust, heat-resistant, and simple to fasten and release. For items where a wire lace system is not practical due to geometry or access constraints, we use alternative stainless steel fastening systems suited to the application. The fastening is designed to be operated by maintenance technicians without specialist tools.

  • What temperature range can removable jackets handle?

Jackets with mineral wool infill are suitable for operating temperatures up to approximately 650°C. For higher temperature applications, ceramic fibre infill extends the operating range. For thin-profile high-performance requirements — where space around the item is restricted — we use aerogel infill, which provides comparable thermal performance at a fraction of the thickness of mineral wool. All infill materials are specified against the operating temperature range before manufacture.

  • Can existing uninsulated valves be surveyed and quoted as a package?

Yes. For sites with a significant number of uninsulated valves and fittings, Fenix carries out a survey — recording every item by location, size, type, and geometry — and produces a priced schedule for the complete jacket set. This is the most efficient way to implement a valve and fitting insulation programme, particularly where the site has no existing record of its insulated systems. The survey output can also form the basis for a heat loss calculation to quantify the energy saving from the jacket installation.
